This list was originally compiled by Larry Tunstall, to whom we are grateful. It was originally intended to be more than a birding resource, rather, a resource for all public places in the East Bay. Hence you will find schools listed and a million other things where birding is not a primary reason for visiting. Nevertheless, we think this is a good birding resource.
This list is currently maintained by Patrick King. I took Larry's original list (last updated in 1998) and reduced some of the content. I also fixed the broken links and made some minor changes. Any problems that you find navigating these pages is probably the result of my work. What I haven't done, and don't intend to do, is update any addresses and phone numbers that have changed in the past six years. Therefore, use any of these details at your own risk.
For birding, the primary use of this index is probably to locate obscure references that birders use to identify places. When first starting birding, I was perplexed by birding alerts for places like "Franks Dump" and "Mount Trashmore." They were not on any maps and even internet searches were troubling. And later I realized that I was not the only aspiring but frustrated new birder.
But the list is really much more than that. All of the trails, cricks, sloughs, fire roads, ponds, points, and peaks are listed here. If, for example, a Yellow Warbler is known to be singing on Upper Packrat Trail in Tilden Park, you can use this resource to find that trail.
Over time we expect the list to go through some further revisions. The references to Thomas Guides will be removed and the list will probably be further reduced. We are considering removing all of the "bricks and mortar" references, and welcome any comments and suggestions along these lines. Remember that it was intended to be more than a birding resource.
