Yerba
Buena Island
DeLorme Northern California
p.104 B-3.
This prominent island in the middle of San
Francisco Bay between San Francisco and
Oakland was called Goat Island by early European
residents, a translation of the name given to it by the first Spanish explorers.
The original tiny village on the site of San Francisco was called Yerba Buena,
in Yerba Buena Cove. Later, when the name of Mission San Francisco de Asis
was transferred to the growing town and the cove was filled, the name Yerba
Buena gradually came to be used for the island. A lighthouse was located
on the island for many years. The Bay Bridge
(opened in 1936) passes through a tunnel in Yerba Buena Island, providing
road access to the island. The artificial
Treasure Island was created on mudflats
north of Yerba Buena Island to serve as the site for the 1939-40 Golden Gate
International Exposition. In 1973, the radar facilities and control center
of the US Coast Guard's Vessel Traffic Service San Francisco were moved to
the top of Yerba Buena Island from the earlier location at Fort Mason in
San Francisco. VTSSF is responsible for the safe movement of ships over 133
miles of waterway from the ocean off the Golden Gate through San Francisco
Bay to Sacramento and Stockton. The island is in San Francisco County.
