Ohlone
(1) DeLorme Northern

A hike-in reservable group campsite administered by
Sunol Regional Wilderness,
located about 5 miles south of the main wilderness area, surrounded by San
Francisco Water Department lands. The East Bay Regional
Park District land here includes 240 acres with hiking trails and a swimming
area created by a removable dam in Alameda
Creek. Some EBRPD staff residences are located at this site. The campsite
is closed during fire season (usually June through October). This land was
originally settled by the Whitlock family, but much of the present landscape
is the work of Eric Erickson, a Swedish immigrant, lumberjack, apprentice
mason, and key worker on the Alameda
Diversion Tunnel from Alameda Creek to
Calaveras Reservoir. His home is now used

Camron-Stanford
House
Thomas 1997 p.649 H-4.
This Italianate Victorian house on the southwest shore of
Lake Merritt in
Oakland was built in 1876, possibly as part
of Samuel Merritt's real estate speculation in the area. It was occupied
by five different families (Camrons, Hewes, Seatons, Stanfords, Wrights)
until 1907, when Oakland purchased it as headquarters for the Oakland Public
Museum (now the Oakland Museum
of California). After the new museum was built in 1969, part of the house
was restored to the period around 1880 when the David Hewes family occupied
it (some space is rented to nonprofit organizations for offices). During
hours when the house is open, an educational historical program is offered
to the public. It is the only remaining example of the luxury houses that
once surrounded the lake, with lawns stretching down to private boathouses
on the shore.

various products (see entries for individual towns and cities).

Valley
Sometimes called the Great Valley, this watershed is bounded by the Coast
Ranges on the west, the Sierra Nevada on the east, the Cascade Range on the
north, and the Transverse Ranges on the south. The northern portion
(Sacramento Valley) is drained by
the Sacramento River, and the southern
portion (San Joaquin Valley) by the
San Joaquin River. These two rivers
merge in the California Delta to flow through
San Francisco Bay and the
Golden Gate into the Pacific Ocean.

Observatory
Thomas 1997 p.650 H-6.
The original observatory was built in 1883 by Anthony Chabot. It was given
to the Oakland school system with the condition that it be forever free to
the public and the public schools. The original observatory was in downtown
Oakland; the current observatory was opened in 1929. Because it sits in the
Hayward Fault zone, a 1977 law bans its use by school classes. In 1989 plans
were approved for a new observatory and science center in Joaquin Miller
Park, where the telescopes and planetarium as well as other facilities will
open to school classes and the public in 1999. See

Clinton
A village on the east bank of San Antonio
Slough extending approximately between the present 3rd Ave and 13th Ave
in Oakland and near the shore of
San Antonio Estuary, laid out about
1850 by Moses Chase and three Patten brothers, Robert, William, and Edward,
who legally purchased land from Antonio Peralta. Named for Mary Ellen Clinton,
Chase's fiancée, who died in Massachusetts while he was earning his
fortune in California. The village prospered, and in 1856 it was combined
with San Antonio to form
Brooklyn. A house that Chase built at 404 E
8th St was the oldest frame house in Oakland when it was demolished in 1948.

Crow Canyon
Gardens
Thomas 1997 p.673 B-2.
The gardens were initially planted in 1978 as a source for fresh herbs, fruits,
and vegetables for Virginia Mudd's new Mudds Restaurant (next door). Her
goal was to advance the art of growing, preparing and serving fresh wholesome
food - to show the direct connection between the garden or farm and the dishes
served in the dining room. In 1990 Virginia Mudd sold the restaurant and
moved to New Mexico. The city of San Ramon
purchased the 7 acres of gardens along San Ramon Creek as a park, maintained
by the nonprofit Crow Canyon Institute. The restaurant was purchased by its
general manager. The Institute provides ecological classes, a summer day-camp
program, and community gardens. It grows food for the Contra Costa Food Bank.

Crown Memorial
State Beach
Thomas 1997 p.669 FG-2.
On the southwest shore of Alameda. Alameda's
sandy beaches were popular resorts before 1880 (the beaches were much more
extensive before landfill altered the currents - the present beach was actually
created artificially on landfill). The most famous resort was
Neptune Beach, created in 1916 at the
end of Webster St, served by the streetcar line from
Oakland. The resort went bankrupt in 1939, and
the military purchased the land, operating a training facility for maritime
officers centered at Oyster Bay (now Crab Cove).
In 1959, California obtained the land and made it a State Park. It was later
named for Robert W. Crown, a deceased state Assemblymember. The park
is operated for the state by the East Bay Regional
Park District. The beach extends from Crab Cove at the northwest to the
Elsie Roemer Bird Sanctuary
at the southeast. Access from McKay Ave, Westline Dr, and Shoreline Dr. No
fee.
