CONTRA COSTA COUNTY

31 March  In the Berkeley Hills, the Summer Tanager was seen in Tilden Nature Area near the Little Farm behind the Junior Ranger Lodge (uphill and to the left, or north, of the Little Farm corrals), around the pond behind the building, in the eucalyptus and pines there. Alan Kaplan

27 March  In the Berkeley Hills, the immature male Summer Tanager continued in Tilden Nature Area, but had moved slightly. As you approach the Environmental Education Center, turn right and go uphill beside the Little Farm to a clump of eucalyptus just below the Junior Rangers clubhouse. Emilie Strauss

26 March  In the Berkeley Hills, a young male Summer Tanager was at the Tilden Nature Area, in flowering eucalyptus by the residence on the back side of the Visitor Center. George Griffeth

7 March  In Antioch, a juvenile Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and a Northern Goshawk were at Black Diamond Mines Regional Preseve. From Hwy 4 in Antioch, take Somersville Rd south toward the hills. After a couple of miles the road turn sharply left, but you want to continue straight into the park for a couple of miles to the last parking lot. Walk a couple of hundred yards down the road (now paved trail) to a group of oaks. The sapsucker was in pepper trees down to the right, across a creekbed and a fenceline. The goshawk was flushed by schoolchildren from the area near the mine entrance. Steve Glover

7 March  In Richmond, the Oldsquaw continued at Richmond Harbor [Marina Bay] near Vincent Park. A Sage Thrasher continued at Miller/Knox Regional Shoreline, in shrubs to the right of the entrance to the northern parking lot. Calvin Lou

5 March  In Richmond, the Sage Thrasher was refound at Miller/Knox Regional Shoreline, in shrubs to the right of the entrance to the northern parking area. Calvin Lou

1 March  In Martinez, there was a male Eurasian Wigeon at McNab Marsh (formerly Shell Marsh) on the east side of Hwy 680 near the Benicia Bridge. From northbound Hwy 680, take Pacheco Blvd and turn right onto Arthur Rd. Follow Arthur under the freeway. After passing Matador Company, turn into the Mountain View Sanitary Plant on the left. The marsh is viewed from this road. The plant may not be open on weekends, so this area should usually be birded on weekdays. Hugh Harvey
