ALAMEDA COUNTY

19 January  In Hayward, 8 Snow Goose and 2 or 3 Short-eared Owls were in Hayward Regional Shoreline at the landfill just north of the flood control channel at the end of W Winton Ave. Tom Condit

16 January  In Hayward, a Short-eared Owl was in Hayward Regional Shoreline on the landfill mound west of the parking area at the end of W Winton Ave, and 8 Snow Goose also were in the area. Tim Molter

15 January  In north Oakland, a Lucy's Warbler returned to a backyard it had visited earlier. To see this bird, call (510) 655-5554. Sheila Dickey

14 January  In Oakland, a female Tufted Duck continued at Lake Merritt, in the duck-feeding area near the Rotary Nature Center. It was first found on 19 December. John Luther

14 January  In Alameda, the American Redstart continues along Mecartney Rd on Bay Farm Island. It's usually been seen near the tennis courts, but not today. Instead, facing the tennis courts, take a path straight ahead around buildings to a canal. Steve Glover

11 January  In Alameda, the American Redstart was seen again along Mecartney Rd on Bay Farm Island. Ed Pandalfino

8 January  In Oakland, 4 Greater White-fronted Goose and 2 Ross' Goose were with Canada Geese at Arrowhead Marsh [Martin Luther King Jr Regional Shoreline]. A male Barrow's Goldeneye, 2 Red Knots, and a Merlin also were at the marshes. Alan Hopkins

7 January  In Alameda, an American Redstart continued along Mecartney Rd on Bay Farm Island. It was first found on December 20. From Hwy 880 in Oakland, take High St west for 2 miles, turn left on Otis, cross the bridge, then turn right on Island Dr. After 0.5 mile, turn right on Mecartney Rd. Park at the west end of the tennis courts on the right. The redstart was in the pines and shrubs around the court. John Luther

7 January  In Hayward, 4 Snow Goose were with Canada Geese at Hayward Regional Shoreline. From the end of W Winton Ave, go through the turnstile and follow the paved path on the north side of the creek. Turn right onto another trail - the birds were on a hillside a quarter mile to the north. 1 January  In Berkeley, an adult male Tufted Duck was in the middle pond at Aquatic Park. Denise Wight


CONTRA COSTA COUNTY

26 January  In eastern Contra Costa County, 40 Cattle Egrets and 25 Lesser Yellowlegs were along Delta Rd, 4 miles east of Hwy 4. Six Cattle Egrets were along Bethel Island Rd, just north of Cypress Rd. Florence Bennett

22 January  In El Cerrito, a Merlin was by the intersection of Tulare Ave & Charles St. Bill Link

14 January  In Richmond, the Sage Thrasher was seen in shrubs to the right of the entrance to the parking area across the street from the Richmond Ramblers building. Calvin Lou

14 January  In Richmond, the Sage Thrasher was refound at Miller/Knox Regional Shoreline, in trees and shrubs to the right of the Richmond Ramblers building (across the street from the shoreline parking area). A male Eurasian Wigeon was still on the pond. Steve Glover

10 January  In Richmond, the Sage Thrasher and Eurasian Wigeon were seen again at Miller/Knox Regional Shoreline. Jean Richmond

8 January  In Richmond, the Sage Thrasher was refound at Miller/Knox Regional Shoreline, in shrubs across the street from the Richmond Ramblers building, by the entrance to the parking area. A Eurasian Wigeon was in the pond. Emilie Strauss
