East Bay Rare Bird Alerts
July 1997

Reports to the Northern California BirdBox, transcribed for BirdWest by Adam Winer.

ALAMEDA COUNTY

22 July  In Albany, an Ancient Murrelet was just offshore to the north of the Albany Bulb landfill. From the end of Buchanan St, walk 0.5 mile out on the main trail, then take a right on the second main trail, and come to the waterfront facing Point Isabel. The bird was just offshore here but was slowly moving farther out. Brian Finch

20 July  In Hayward, the Arctic Tern and 2 Black Skimmers were still in the previously reported location at Hayward Regional Shoreline. Jennifer Matkin

13 July  In Hayward, the Arctic Tern was still in the same location at Hayward Regional Shoreline, chasing Forster's Terns in ponds near the Black Skimmers. Mark Eaton

12 July  In the Oakland hills, 16 singing Hermit Thrushes were in Redwood Regional Park, 12 in Alameda County and 4 in Contra Costa County. One of the Alameda County birds was feeding a young bird. The thrushes were mostly along the Chown and French Trails, accessible from the Redwood Gate on Redwood Rd (see a park map available at the entrance). These records appear to be extremely unusual - this is the first nesting record from Alameda County, and the only nesting record in Contra Costa County was in 1941. Steve Glover

4 July  Near Sunol, a female Wild Turkey with 2 chicks was in Sunol Regional Wilderness in a field on the left side of the road between the headquarters and the end of the road. Trent Orr

2 & 4 July  In Hayward, the alternate-plumaged Arctic Tern was still near Johnson's Landing in Hayward Regional Shoreline. It was on the southern end of the southwesternmost island inside the chain-link fence. Bob Reiling, Emily Strauss

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY

12 July  See entry for 12 July in Alameda County above.
